WHAT IS SO GOOD ABOUT THE BREED ?

We are running a business, and we want the best RETURN from our investement

Maximum kgs of lambs in a minimum amount of times.

Carcass weight usally 10-20 % more than other breed of meat sheep

latest  research from :  WAMMCO ( W/A) 27-FEB-2008  using viascan tecnology to analyze the net meat yield of carcass has shown that second cross dorper running on natural pastor with no supplementry feeding to yield a brilliant result : 57,1% OF NET MEAT YIELD. THANKS TO WAMMCO  & J K WILSON AND CO.

MORE MEAT ,IS SIMPLY MORE MONEY

Trials in Australia and overseas has proven the breed SUCCESSFUL ABILITY to lift return on per Acre/Hectare.

Few Universities in AMERICA are conducting trials and research,  on the DORPER/WHITE DORPER  for the  COMMERCIAL MARKET ,and the potential of the breed to significantly improve the FARM RETURNS

DORPER are low MAINTENANCE:, no shearing,no crutching ,no mulesing,no flystrike,no lice treatement, therefore a very very low input cost and major saving on other breeds.

A MAJOR organic meat distrubutor ( CLEAVER MEAT) will only buy dorper/dorper crosses, again this prove the breed to be ideally suited for organic market

For 65 years the breed has being perfected, so lets Bank on it

Please do read our section about WHY WHITE DORPER, and do your own research . Dont be shy ask the question ?

HOW MANY RAMS I NEED TO GET FOR MY EWES ?
  1. Young ram (yearling) can service up to twenty ewes,Older ram can service    anything from thirty ewes and more.

We know from different (prime lambs)producers using Dorper/White Dorper  rams over their ewes, that with the right feed and condition ,prior to joining that the BREED is able to serve up to 200 ewes

DORPER DO SHED THEIR WOOL ,WHAT HAPPENS TO THE WOOL AND WHEN THEY SHED IT ?

THE DORPER breed shed wool once it hots up any time between spring and summer.

AS the wool is an organic matter,it either break down in the soil over a period of time, or it will be put to good use for bird nest and stuffing for pillows or other fine choices.

AS to when they grow their wool again ? that,s  mainly takes place in Autumn as the days gets shorter and colder

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DORPER AND MERINO ?

MERINO is a wool breed ,majority of its energy goes towards growing wool.

DORPER is a meat breed and a very efficient into turning its energy toward growing meat. merino has a flocking intinct allways together, and has preference for definite food.

DORPER on the other hand goes into sub-group, not as flighty,is a browser and grasier, perfect for weed control and very placid by nature.

WHEN CAN I BREED MY DORPER MAIDEN EWE AND AT WHAT AGE ?

FEW trials has taken place around australia to compare the breeding of DORPER to other breed, so far dorper has come on top  in terms of pregnancy rate, lambing percentage and much less weight needed for dorper at joining.

Well for us as a matter of fact we had STUD EWES  being artificially inseminated at the young age of SEVEN MONTH AND THREE WEEKS ,NOW at the young age of less than 13 month we have their babies ( four twins and six singles). THIS IS A FACT UNHEARD OF IN OTHER BREED.

SO if your ewes are in good conditions ,you can mate them from seven month and onwards with a minimal weights of 36kgs

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD I WEAN MY RAM LAMB?

White dorper ram lamb grow quit substancially, they should be Weaned no later

then 14 weeks of age, otherwise if left unattended to,they will mate with their

mothers and/or siblings.

DO DORPER HAVE A RESISTANCE TO WORMS ?

Some breeders do tell you so,from personal experience, i do not beleive so.

They are bred originally in SOUTH AFRICA in/around the desert belt, were worm

burden is very minimal, that does not mean they have resistance.

They are by nature more resillient and bred to survive in extreme harsh

condition, but if you care about your animal do drench (organically i hope).

This is my opinion only! the rest is up to you .

HOW MANY CROSSES TILL WE REACH PURE BLOOD?

The start is to breed a FULLBLOOD RAM(SOUTH AFRICAN BLOODLINES) to any other ewe breed and the result is a first cross ( F 1) or 50%dorper

you back cross again that F1 EWE to FULLBLOOD RAM and their baby is an F2 /75% dorper

you repeat the same excersise  for three more times and the results will be: F3/87.5%- then F4/93,75% , and last is the F5/ 96.875% OR A PERCENTAGE DORPER.

DORPER SHEEP SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA,DO REGISTER UPGRADE AS AN UPGRADE

FULLBLOOD AND PUREBLOOD ARE THEY DIFFERENT ? WHAT IS THE NEW TERMS?

AS of march 2007 the DORPER SHEEP SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA has ammended the following. All sheep bred through crossing from  F1 TO F5 is to be called a PERCENTAGE DORPER and or upgrades

On the  other hand Fullblood are only bred using South African Bloodlines in Producing their off-spring (lambs),and the only one to be used in a STUD Operation

On the other hand, PERCENTAGE SHEEP is an animal is obtained through the crossing process from f1/50% to F4-F5 or 93% dorper and above.

SO if your are buying a fullblood make sure to obtain a certificate that specifically state that it is so or check with the DORPER SHEEP SOCIETY ,their website is: www.dorper.com.au

DO NOT be fooled by Ads, make sure what you are buying is a true fullblood  .

So now there is only two types  a percentage sheep/upgrade and a full blood animal

IS THERE A PROBLEM RUNING DORPER NEXT DOOR,TO WOOL SHEEP BREEDER ?

According to AUSTRALIAN WOOL INNOVATION LTD: PROJECT FINAL REPORT EC573,DATED DECEMBER 2003 ( MANAGING THE RISK OF DARK AND/OR MEDULLATED FIBRE CONTAMINATION)

A SIXTY PAGE REPORT  QUOTE : SECTION 6.4.2 PAGE  42- 43

"FOR the Merinos run next door to exotics, there was no perceptible increase in dark and/or medullated fibre contamination above that caused by urine stain and/or pigmentation

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN GRAZING BEHAVIOUR BETWEEN DORPER AND MERINO ?

The grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep, as well as other related aspects (pasture intake, walking habits and trampling) is reviewed. It was clear that Dorper sheep are less-selective grazers, compared to Merino-type breeds. Dorpers utilised shrubs and bushes to a greater extent, but grass to a lesser extent in relation to Merino sheep. The Dorper also utilised a larger number of different plant species than Merinos. Dorpers walked less to select food, or a suitable spot to graze, which consequently led to a shorter grazing time and less separate grazing periods. Dorpers consumed less herbage per metabolic size compared to Merino-type sheep. No uniform pattern in the walking distance of Dorpers was observed when compared to other sheep breeds. The relative trampling factor for Dorper sheep was less than that of evaluated Merino-type sheep. The review revealed a lack on information on the grazing behaviour and diet selection of Dorper sheep under more intensive grazing conditions.

Moreso ,Dorper cosume up to 15% less water compared to other wool breed

The above are abstract from  SOUTH AFRICA !

HOW TO BE SURE OF BUYING A STUD SHEEP TO BE TYPE 4 OR 5 (AMENDED 3/09)

The only way, that a south african inspector has typed and put A METAL TAG  on the sheep, which is also recorded with the south african sheep breeders society and  THE DORPER SHEEP SOCIRTY OF AUSTRALIA

DO NOT BELEIVE THE TYPE UNLESS ,YOU SEE THE EAR TAG AND THE SCORE SHEET.

ALSO  ,only member of the SOUTH AFRICAN DORPER BREEDERS SOCIETY / AND NOW MEMBERS OF THE AUSTRALIAN DORPER SHEEP SOCIETY(FROM MARCH 2009)  and only them can have EAR TAGS ACCORDING TO TYPE

LATER ON ALL STUD SHEEP (4 OR 5) IF REGISTERED, WILL BE BE AVAILABLE TO DOWNLOAD FROM THE DORPER SHEEP SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA ON THE FOLLOWING WEB SITE; www.dorper.com.au

DO I HAVE TO DRENCH MY SHEEPS AND LAMBS ?

As a matter of practice, we have quit a subtantial number of stud sheep, therefore we can not afford or gamble with the health of our flock (extremely costly)

we opted out of chemicals to naturals with the following minerals:

dolomite  amount (625%), lime (100%) ,yellow dusting sulfure(100%), copper sulfate (75%),  and unchellated seaweed (100%)

work on 1 kg as (100%),mix some grain to get the sheep to start on it

we have never looked back since we have used this amazing mix

The sheep never looked better

SO , IF YOU WANT  TO GET AWAYS FROM CHEMICALS ,CHOICE IS YOURS

How is the taste of Dorper meat ?

Superb! Dorper lamb does not have the “mutton taste” that causes so many people to avoid eating lamb. It is succulent and fine textured.

MAJORITY of trials in AUSTRALIA and worldwide, has proven the superiority of the breed in terms of ( TENDERNESS, JUICINESS,GRATIFYING AND SUBTLE)

The MAIN PURPOSE  of the Dorper Breed is to Produce Prime Lamb in harsh condition, where other breed fail even to exist

What About Crossing a Dorper Ram with Wool-Type Ewes?

Early university trials have shown that the Dorper influence will improve the meat qualities and growth rate of lambs from popular commercial wool type ewe breeds. However, the F1 lambs will have a diminished wool conformation and value( to be changed) once there is enough slaughter numbers to be exported
